A Changing of the Guard: ‘Practical Magic 2’ Ends Spider-Man’s Historic Reign at the Box Office

The North American box office landscape underwent a seismic shift this weekend as a long-standing titan was finally dethroned. After a dominant six-week streak that brought it to the precipice of cinematic history, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has officially relinquished its crown. The catalyst for this change is the highly anticipated sequel, Practical Magic 2, a supernatural dramedy that has defied the odds and industry expectations to claim the top spot in its debut weekend.

The Weekend Tally: A New Leader Emerges

The numbers from Friday’s box office performance provide a clear narrative: audiences were ready for a change. Practical Magic 2, distributed by Warner Bros., secured a formidable No. 1 debut, pulling in $13 million across 4,146 North American screens on Friday alone. Industry analysts project the film will close its opening frame with a total haul of approximately $30 million.

While a $30 million opening might seem modest compared to the gargantuan numbers typically associated with superhero tentpoles, it represents a significant victory for the mid-budget dramedy. It also serves as a testament to the enduring, albeit unconventional, power of a cult-classic brand.

A Tale of Two Releases

To understand the significance of this opening, one must look back at the original 1998 film. Directed by Griffin Dunne and based on the novel by Alice Hoffman, the original Practical Magic was widely considered a commercial disappointment upon its initial release. With a production budget of $75 million, it opened to a lackluster $13 million, ultimately limping to a $94 million global finish.

However, the film’s trajectory changed significantly once it hit the home video market. Over the decades, it cultivated a fiercely loyal fanbase, eventually achieving the status of a "cult classic." The decision to revisit the world of the Owens sisters—witches burdened by a generational curse that condemns their romantic interests to death—has clearly paid off, proving that brand longevity can sometimes be forged in the living rooms of fans long after a film leaves the theater.

The Evolution of the Owens Clan

Practical Magic 2 picks up the narrative 25 years after the events of the original, shifting the focus to the next generation. As Sally’s daughters come of age, they find themselves grappling with the same ancient, mystical curse that defined their mother and aunt’s lives.

The production has leaned heavily into nostalgia by securing the return of original stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, who reprise their iconic roles. They are joined by returning cast members Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, providing a seamless bridge between the two eras. The injection of fresh talent—including Maisie Williams, Joey King, Xolo Maridueña, and Lee Pace—appears to have successfully bridged the gap between the original film’s fanbase and a new, younger demographic.

The Rest of the Field: Mixed Results

While Practical Magic 2 celebrated a triumph, other newcomers experienced a more turbulent introduction to the market.

The Uprising Fails to Gain Traction

Focus Features’ historical drama The Uprising struggled to find its footing. Despite the prestige of writer-director Paul Greengrass and the star power of Andrew Garfield, the film debuted in ninth place. Earning only $1.38 million on Friday from 2,068 screens, the film is projected to finish the weekend with a disappointing $3.1 million.

Set in the 14th century, the film chronicles the story of a plowman who leads a common-man rebellion against King Richard II. Alongside Garfield, the cast includes Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Woody Norman, and Katherine Waterston. Critics have noted that while the craft is characteristically high-quality for a Greengrass production, the historical niche may have proven too challenging for the current multiplex climate.

Runner and the Mid-Tier Competition

Angel Studios’ action-thriller Runner secured the second-place spot, earning an estimated $2.5 million on Friday from 2,568 locations. Projections indicate a weekend total of $6 million. Starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson, the film follows a soldier and his less-prepared partner on the run from a cartel. It is a solid, if unspectacular, performance that highlights the continued demand for grounded, high-stakes action films in the post-pandemic era.

Elsewhere, Universal’s The Odyssey remains a steady performer in its ninth weekend. Having grossed $2.06 million on Friday, it is on track for an $8.1 million weekend. Christopher Nolan’s historical epic has been a juggernaut, pushing its domestic cumulative total to an impressive $601 million.

Rounding out the top five, Ketchup Entertainment’s Coyote vs. Acme continues its theatrical run, grossing $1.4 million on Friday. It is expected to earn $6.3 million by Sunday, bringing its three-week domestic total to $47.8 million.

The Spider-Man Phenomenon: The Record Within Reach

Despite dropping to fourth place, the story of the weekend is arguably still the performance of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Even in its seventh week of release, the Sony-Marvel film generated $2 million on Friday. It is targeting an $8.5 million weekend, which will bring its domestic total to a staggering $935.27 million.

The implications of these figures are massive. Spider-Man is currently within striking distance of the all-time domestic box office record of $936.6 million, set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. With only $1.33 million left to go to claim the top spot, industry experts agree that the record will almost certainly fall within the next few days.

Industry Implications and Future Outlook

The dethroning of Spider-Man signals a maturing of the post-summer box office environment. For months, the industry was dominated by a single, monolithic blockbuster. The arrival of Practical Magic 2 marks a return to a more diversified theatrical marketplace, where mid-budget films and genre-specific titles can thrive alongside tentpole spectacles.

Analyzing the Shift

The success of Practical Magic 2 raises questions about the "legacy sequel" model. By capitalizing on the nostalgia of a cult classic rather than a massive franchise, Warner Bros. has successfully demonstrated that there is significant untapped potential in older, beloved properties that were perhaps ahead of their time during their initial theatrical windows.

Conversely, the struggles of The Uprising highlight the ongoing challenges facing historical dramas and mid-budget prestige films. Even with top-tier talent, the "middle" of the market remains highly competitive and sensitive to audience appetites, which currently seem to favor escapism and established intellectual property.

Looking Toward the Future

As Spider-Man prepares to potentially overtake The Force Awakens, the industry will be watching closely to see if the milestone sparks a renewed interest in the film, perhaps giving it the final push needed to solidify its place in history. Meanwhile, studios will likely continue to analyze the weekend’s data to refine their strategies for the upcoming fall slate.

The box office is rarely a static entity, and this weekend’s results prove that even the most dominant champions eventually face a challenger they cannot fend off. Whether Practical Magic 2 can sustain its momentum or if it was merely the beneficiary of a curious audience remains to be seen. For now, the North American box office has a new No. 1, and the history books are preparing for a new name at the top of the all-time list.
